Jesus…No Greater Love

Believers Across the Globe Join Hands to Bring the Gospel to the Screen

by Audra Jennings Thursday, April 22, 2010
In October of 2009, Bruce Marchiano, best known for his actor’s portrayal of Jesus as a joyous, compassionate, and impassioned Savior in the groundbreaking film The Gospel According to Matthew, launched NewJesusMovie.com, announcing his vision for a new Gospel film, Jesus... No Greater Love.

Not only would Jesus... No Greater Love be a word-for-word film using the book of John, but it would also be produced as a non-profit ministry, not for the purpose of “box-office,” but with a long term vision to translate the film into the languages of the world and partner with ministries/missionaries across the world for global outreach. A pioneering concept, NewJesusMovie.com invited Christians from all over America and the globe to unite across denominational and cultural lines as one “producer” to fund the film... and, as the saying goes, “God is doing it!”

“I think it really hit me one afternoon when my assistant phoned and said, ‘You won’t believe this, but we received a donation today from Chad,’” says Marchiano. “I remember being silenced by that and thinking to myself, ‘How on earth does someone on the continent of Africa, all the way in Chad, even hear about this, let alone be moved to give?’ I mean, isn’t Chad one of those countries that people give to?’”

Since its launch, NewJesusMovie.com has garnered support from [55] countries, not to mention every corner of the United States and Canada. Brazil, Israel, England, Singapore, and India have all come to the table as word spreads rapidly through social media venues such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth.

Some of the most amazing things that have happened so far include the following:
• In South Africa, a twenty-eight year old cosmetologist has opened a bank account named “SA Supports the Making of John” to gather local support.
• In Norway, a twenty-two year old “tech geek” has launched a web site in his home language.
• Two African students living in Chicago have joined to raise funds by selling candy and bookmarks to their friends and churches.
• A pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia, has organized a Columbus fund-raising committee and has also sent letters to Christian leaders across the USA.
• In Sweden, a grandmother has not only given regularly, but has also challenged all her Swedish brothers and sisters to do the same, writing, "Filmen Jesus – No Greater Love, har en vision att människor i hela världen skall nås av budskapet om frälsningen genom Jesus Kristus, och att de ska både se och höra om detta på deras eget språk. Därför är det viktigt att stödja detta filmprojekt. Bli filmproducent du också!" TRANSLATION: THE FILM JESUS... NO GREATER LOVE HAS A VISION THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL BE ABLE TO SEE AND HEAR ABOUT THE SALVATION THROUGH JESUS IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. THEREFORE IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT THIS FILM PROJECT. YOU ALSO NEED TO BECOME A PRODUCER!

“In Exodus 35, the Lord gave Moses a pattern to build the Tabernacle,” Marchiano recounts. “He told Moses to go to His children to supply the gold and silver, the fine cloths, etc. They gave in such great numbers that no one was specifically burdened, and eventually Moses told them to stop, that they already had enough. The more I read this story the more I felt that the Lord would have me follow this same pattern: to go to His children to build this ‘Tabernacle.’ In this way, no one could ever get the credit and only God would get the glory. At the same time, free from the ‘investor model,’ the film is free to uncompromisingly serve souls, which is what the Gospel was birthed for and what we’re aiming for. And so the believers come, excited about Jesus, impassioned to reach souls, uniting under the banner of this vision to bring Jesus to the screen—to their communities and nations.”

Dima from Zimbabwe shares, “Masihlanganeni njengemuli bantu beNkosi sincedise ngokupha imali ukuze umsebenzi weVangeli uqhubeke. Imthandazo yethu iyafunekwa kakhulu emsebenzini lowo, ngiyalicela bantu beNkosi, asihlanganeni! Ivangeli likaJesu maliqhubeke!” TRANSLATION: LET’S JOIN IN AND WORK TOGETHER TO FURTHER THE GOSPEL THROUGH THIS MOVIE. IT TAKES FINANCES AND PRAYER TO GET THINGS DONE SO, PLEASE, JOIN IN, TAKE YOUR PLACE, AND LET THE GOSPEL GO ON!
Pastor Richard Edwards from Cornwall, England says, “My congregation is behind you!” Rita from Italy says, “Siamo entusiasti del nuovo film di Gesu. La nostra preghiera e di arrivare al cuore di miglioni di persone nel mondo.” TRANSLATION: WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW JESUS MOVIE. IT IS OUR PRAYER FOR IT TO REACH MILLIONS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. Benjamin emails from Norway, “Så sitter jeg med disse ordene i mitt hjerte: ‘Dette er av Gud.’” TRANSLATION: “I’M LEFT WITH THESE WORDS IN MY HEART: ‘THIS IS FROM GOD.’”

The budget for a state-of-the-art Hollywood production of this magnitude would typically be more than $100 million. “Big name” and star salaries account for much of that cost. Because Jesus... No Greater Love is not pursuing the star route (as Marchiano says it, “The only star in this will be Jesus!”), Marchiano and his team have composed a budget of $44,927,369.82, with the film to be shot on location in Israel and utilizing the most forward-looking CGI, 3D, etc., technology.

And as the Hollywood community more and more takes Marchiano’s vision seriously, film-making’s best are beginning to come forward. By way of example, special effects make-up artist Joel Harlow has signed on. Best known for his work in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films and, most recently, Alice in Wonderland, Harlow, who just won an Oscar for his work on Star Trek, offers, “I’ve told Bruce I’ll do this film for free, and I can’t wait!”

“You won’t believe it,” says Marchiano, “but behind the scenes, the Jesus... No Greater Love team is a small group of highly skilled volunteers (no one is receiving a salary), ‘missionaries’ if you will, joined together with Christians across the world to bring Jesus to the screen in a dynamic way that I can’t describe without compromising the script’s confidentiality. There are no big names in this effort, no heroes—just people with a passion for Jesus, giving of themselves to see souls saved. Producing along with us are many ‘little old ladies’ saving coins in their cookie jars, teens mowing lawns and washing cars, and even an executive or two. Everyday people simply giving of themselves and doing as they can, which is all God needs to accomplish His purposes.

I just received a card containing twenty-three dollars from two precious kids, ages nine and twelve. They write, ‘Hi Bruce, we wanted to do something so we recycled cans and bottles. We know it’s not a lot of money but we hope it helps because we can’t wait to see this movie!’ It’s signed, ‘Shane and Brooke.’

I can tell you, a thing like that brings tears to my eyes, and there is no way I’m going to disappoint those kids. Today we’re at $300,000 (including their twenty-three!) and with hearts like Shane’s and Brooke’s joining us, with support coming from even third world countries—from people who truly don’t have ten dollars to spare but still recognize that the world needs Jesus—there is no stopping what God can do!”
