Top 10 Unique Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Themes for 2012-2013

Go Beyond the Ordinary and Into Extraordinary!

A great theme can make or break a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. A theme can influence every aspect of your party, from décor to food. Remember that there are only 52 Saturdays a year, and when all your child’s friends are also turning 13, it can bet a bit competitive picking which parties to attend and whose not to. So before you start planning your celebration with a theme that’s been done a million times before, check out our list of unique themes to make your Bar or Bat Mitzvah stand out, and let’s face it, be the one all the kids want to be at.

1. Club/Lounge
Although Bar and Bat Mitzvah honorees aren’t old enough to legally enjoy clubs and lounges, that’s no reason that the birthday boy or girl shouldn’t be able to enjoy an adult atmosphere for a night. This kid-favorite theme is all about the tone and feel of the space. Try transforming a normal room with lounge furniture and mood lighting. You can even create a signature mock-tini, and bottle service couch-side, in honor of the birthday boy/girl. Kick up the music with a hot city DJ (spend a few extra bucks) instead of the local guy and keep everyone on the dance floor all night.

2. Fashionista
Like fashion itself, the fashion theme is completely customizable and can be tailored to represent any child’s interests. You can make the entire event feel like a fashion show (what better excuse for the birthday star to debut fabulous outfits?), make the theme shopping in general, or choose a favorite designer. You can channel the classiness of Chanel or the funky vibe of Betsy Johnson. We’ve even contacted favorite stores and brands to do fashion shows at the event!

3. Cirque de Soleil
If you love the fun and playfulness that a carnival theme provides, but are looking for something a little more distinctive, consider a Cirque de Soleil theme. Not only can you use the show to inspire your decorations, you can wow your guests by hiring contortionists and aerialists for live entertainment. Having an aerialist flying over guests while they enjoy their dinner would make your Bar/Bat Mitzvah as memorable than the real show.

4. The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings
With the release of the first in the next Hobbit trilogy, the LOTR mania is back in full swing. Power, fire, magic…everything boys love! Turn your Bar Mitzvah into a journey to middle earth and work with lots of greenery, mosses, trees and more. Tree rounds make for great chargers and can set the theme in motion, and sending gold rings as invites will be smash hit. Don’t forget a staff of power for the guest of honor!

5. The White Party

If it’s good enough for P.Diddy, it’s good enough for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah theme. Picture an all white space, filled with white rented furniture, lots of crystals and rhinestones and all the guests dressed in white. While it might make for a semblance of a dress code, we find it makes the what to wear” question a lot easier when they have a bit of direction. Add tons of candles (you can get quality LED candles that look great and have no actual flame) and maybe some light blue wash lighting and you’ve got a very sophisticated room. Again, add a fabulous DJ and you’ve got a rockin’ bash on your hands.

6. Top Chef / Hell’s Kitchen

Make food the focal point of this theme. Whether you go easy and setup cool food stations with different themes, or get your guests engaged in a real contest, people love it. Try sushi rolling lessons with a contest for who can do the best roll (and don’t forget the “creativity award”) . For décor, let the chrome look of the stainless steel kitchens inspire you, with pops of orange inspired by the Top Chef logo.

7. Snow White and the Huntsmen
This movie takes a classic fairy tale and makes it feel more grown up, perfect to inspire a coming of age event like a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The theme is all about hi-design and using feathers and monochromatic elements to create an intense but textured look and feel. Have elements of Snow White’s enchanted forest meet the dark medieval feel of the Queen’s castle to create a mature take on the Disney classic, and an event your guests will never forget.

8. Carnival
The carnival theme allows for great games and entertainment that fit in perfectly and are fun to play. When we do carnival, we love to take it to turn-of-the-century-funky and go old and modern at the same time. A barker at the door, the bearded lady, tattoo artist, face painters, sword swallowers and more make it much cooler than just a room full of games. The food follows suit with mini sliders and milkshakes, cotton candy stations, pretzel carts, root beer floats…let your imagination wander. Oh, and have the vendors all where white button down shirts and buy cheap suspenders and skimmer hats for the full effect!

9. The Avengers
Another popular movie, this theme is so great because almost everybody, no matter their age or lifestyle, can find an Avengers character that they love, relate to or love to hate! You can choose the classic Marvel colors of red and white to decorate your party, but don’t forget to give a nod to your favorite hero in your décor. It’s definitely one of those themes that allow you to customize tables to characters and colors. And, with costumes so cheap (and potentially off-season), it is relatively cheap to buy a bunch of costumes so kids can have fun role-playing and just being generally goofy.

10. Sports
Although the Olympics only come around once every two years, your favorite sports theme is always in season. For most teenagers, sports are a big part of their life, so it only makes sense to include that in one of the biggest celebrations of their life. The best part about a sports theme is that there are so many possibilities, for example you can choose to focus on only one sport, like baseball or hockey. If you can’t decide, there’s nothing wrong with combining favorite sports or having a general sports theme take over the whole event.

The key picking a theme is to start with your child’s interests, hobbies, loves…who he or she thinks is cool and popular, and who they like to be in front of their friends. It also helps to work with them to cut out things they love from magazines and make a quick collage out of it. You’ll be amazed at the great information you can get, and how different it might be from your perceptions! These themes are meant to give you some ideas and help you get out of the typical Bar/Bat Mitzvah box and maybe, just maybe, get a few extra “cool” points from your son or daughter (whether they admit it or not!)
