Inspiring fathers one page at a time
Fr. Larry Richards teaches men to become ‘the man God created you to be’

SAN FRANCISCO, June 8, 2010 – Father’s Day honors fathers and celebrates fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society. Being a father is not an easy job, but Pennsylvania based Catholic priest Fr. Larry Richards continues to challenge and inspire fathers with his book, “Be A Man: Become the Man God Created You to Be.”

In “Be A Man,” Fr. Richards recounts his own struggles to learn true manhood, and he shares inspiring personal stories from men he counseled and served in his decades of being a priest. The book encourages men to be the best fathers they can be, to focus on the right goals in life, to acknowledge their faults, to admit weaknesses and limitations, and to be masculine without being “macho.”

“You are the sacrament of Fatherhood to your children just like St. Joseph was the sacrament of Fatherhood to Jesus,” Fr. Richards says. “Just as God used St. Joseph to form Jesus Christ in His humanity, so too does He want to use you to form your children.”

Fr. Richards also addresses a notion that has become almost a cliché in today’s society – the dysfunctional family. “Everybody comes from some type of dysfunctional family,” he writes. “It is our job to deal with it and get over it. You need to deal with your past and then start looking for a future full of hope.”

Published by Ignatius Press, “Be A Man” helps men to rediscover the importance of their spiritual lives and encourages them to be men of true love and wisdom. Fr. Richards also encourages men to pursue holiness and to find strength in faith and in genuine love.

At the end of each chapter in the book, Fr. Richards suggests three tasks that men – fathers – should complete on their journeys to becoming the men God created them to be. In the book’s epilogue, he offers all of the tasks in one list. “So,” he writes, “don’t be afraid – take courage and be a man!”
