THE INSTITUTE Calls on Congress to Recognize Armenian Genocide

Alexandria, VA, March 3, 2010 -- THE INSTITUTE on Religion and Public Policy calls on the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives to pass H. Res. 252, "Affirmation of the United States Record on the Armenian Genocide Resolution".

Introduced by Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), George Radanovich (R-CA), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) and over 100 other cosponsors, the resolution "calls upon the President to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of the failure to realize a just resolution; and (2) calls upon the President in the President's annual message commemorating the Armenian Genocide issued on or about April 24, to accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide and to recall the proud history of United States intervention in opposition to the Armenian Genocide."

"The Foreign Affairs Committee tomorrow can begin to rectify a historic error by recognizing the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide in a clear and significant manner."

The House Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to mark up the resolution at 10am on Thursday, March 4, 2010.
