Fr. Larry Richards, in his first book, Be A Man: Becoming the Man God Created You to Be, tackles the issue of love and the role it plays in a man’s life. He discusses the need for men to redefine love. “The Spirit of God makes us loving,” Fr. Richards says. “What does it mean for us to be men of love? We love everything, right? We love pizza. We love our families. We love our wives. We love our dogs. We love sports. We have one word that covers all those experiences. But we really need to look deeper into what the word ‘love’ means.” Love means following God’s commandments and being an example of love to the world. In Be A Man, Fr. Richards recounts his experiences with men of his parish and discusses the historical nature of love and charity. Recognizing that love starts with God, Fr. Larry encourages men to dig deeper into their hearts to see that loving others is worth the reward to give oneself to another – much like Jesus did for the world. “It will cost you your life,” Fr. Richards says. “When you say to someone, ‘I love you’, you are really saying, ‘I will give up my life for you.’ That is hard … Some obstacles of love are fear and hurt … Gentlemen, everybody you ever love will hurt you. Get over it.” Fr. Richards points out several times in Be A Man that “Jesus Christ—the God of the Universe, gave us one commandment: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’” Richards reminds men that God forbid them to judge. “We Catholics are sometimes great judgers, but not so great lovers. We judge everybody: our families; the people we work with; our friends. We hold it up at righteousness,” remarks Fr. Richards. “It is time to change! When we learn to love as God loves, by His grace, we can change the world.” He discusses the role of a man in the world, loving not only his wife and children, but the poor and even his enemies. Fr. Richards believes that service to the poor through tithing and service makes a man a better person. Published by Ignatius Press, Be A Man helps men to rediscover the importance of the spiritual life and encourages men to be a man of true love and wisdom. Fr. Richards also encourages men to pursue holiness and to find strength in faith and in genuine love. Each chapter of Be A Man ends with tasks that must be accomplished and questions for discussion and reflection.
