Cartoons to battle child abuse on internet sites

Your favored cartoon character on your Facebook
The past few days this message has made its way around the Facebook world, "Change your FB profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal? To not see a human face on FB. Join the fight against child abuse. Copy & paste to your status to invite your friends to do the same." Many people are taking their friends up on this movement, using childhood cartoons from the 80's and childhood cartoons from the 90's as their picture. Mighty Mouse, Pinky and the Brain, and Strawberry Shortcake have been used by lots of people to depict themselves.
Childhood cartoons and child abuse
There have been several times before where status changes and profile pictures have been used on Facebook to raise awareness for one thing or another. Often, there is a specific issue chosen for awareness. The problem is that awareness doesn’t necessarily tell people how to actually do something. There isn’t any data on just how lots of people are changing their profile picture to take part in this cause, but from appearances, thousands if not millions are taking part in this cause.
How to do something
The issue of child abuse is a lot bigger and takes a lot more than memories of our own childhoods. Bringing awareness to an issue and taking action on a concern are two different things. While I'm not discounting how important awareness is, you need to take action beyond that to fully help the cause. If you want to make a change on childhood abuse, you need to do something other than discover a cartoon from the 80's to use as your profile picture. Try making a call or donation to support the National Child Abuse Hotline, or at least including 1-800-4-A-CHILD with your Facebook status. Don’t forget that a childhood cartoon is only a picture and not more.
