Even as a children's book character, Uncle Chestnut may seem far-fetched. Although he is a comic, absent-minded but insightful gentleman described as being "big and round like a chestnut" by his nephew, he is in fact based on the real G.K. Chesterton, the English author and journalist of the early 20th Century.
