California Father to Bicycle 420 miles for Parental Rights Amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A California resident plans to bicycle across the Golden State to promote the Parental Rights Amendment. Vincent Collins will begin his trek from Los Angeles to the State House in Sacramento – a journey of 420 miles – to call attention to parental rights bill H.J.R. 42. According to his Google profile, Collins plans to embark on his “Ride4Rights” on May 2, 2009. “I am not looking to pick sides or single out any point, topic or issue because there are too many,” Collins says on his blog. “I will be asking for signatures to support Rep. Pete Hoekstra (MI) and the proposed Parental Rights Amendment.” Collins plans on getting the attention of political leaders and the public, first with a rally in front of U.S. Rep. Jerry Lewis’s (CA-41) Redlands office, then with his bicycle journey from L.A. to the front steps of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office five days later. The starting point for his bicycle trek, will be a performence of selected readings in Los Angeles, where he plans to meet father’s rights advocate and actor Alec Baldwin at a 7:00 PM PT session. Baldwin will be at the event as a guest reader for New York’s Symphony Space. After this first stop, Collins will hop on his bicycle and begin the 420 mile ride. Collins says this issue is about everyone’s rights. “Even though I have my own reasons for wanting to make this journey on a bicycle I am hoping that others will join in, even for part of the ride,” Collins says. “Everyone can ride because all parents’ rights will be protected with H.J.R. 42.” The native of Washington state and divorced father of three, is looking for a bike shop to sponsor the Ride4Rights, and others to sponsor food and lodging. The parents' rights group ParentalRights.org will help organize a rally before Collins leaves for Sacramento. To organize a rally in support of Collins, please email ride4rights@parentalrights.org. Track Collins’ journey on Twitter and Facebook.
