Titleist AP2 Irons Review

by peter addion Tuesday, May 03, 2011
On the market since 2008, the Titleist AP2 Irons are an attractive, modern looking set of golf clubs sale from one of the games premier manufacturers.

Primarily the irons are aimed more at the mid to low handicap golfer. Players who already play a pretty good golf game, but are perhaps looking to take their play up another level.

They are definitely nice looking irons that would look good in any golfers bag. However this isn't always the indicator of a good performing iron, as alot of good golfers will tell you.

The AP2 models we studied were fitted with the stock shatfs, which are the True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts in stiff flex. More information about the technology and specifiactions of the AP2 irons can be found at the Titleist Golf website.

Despite being aimed at the better player, the Titleist AP2 irons are relatively easy to hit if you have a decent repetitive swing. Even the longer irons don't really present too much of a problem in this area, as long as you're not intimidated by them.

When you hit one pure with these irons it does feel great, the feeling is so soft and you get a lovely trajectory on the golf ball that really flies through the air.

However distance control was a slight issue that we found, with the mid and long irons in particular, the distance you carry the golf ball can be quite inconsistent. Sometimes you can get up to 15 yards more than you'd expect on a shot, but other times you get exactly the yardage you're after.

This admittedly doesn't happen very often, but it can be abit of a hindrance at times when picking the right club for an approach shot.

In terms of feel though this forged iron did perform reasonably well on the whole. Although generally it was abit easier to work a draw on a shot than a fade. You usually have to put abit more effort into the swing when playing for a fade.

Forgiveness wise the AP2s were pretty reliable, considering the main target group. The heads regularly stay solid at impact and as such most mis-hits do still go relatively straight, very rarely do shots with the AP2 irons go way offline.

However although the distance can be inconsistent on well hit shots. There is a definite loss of some yards almost always when you don't catch one right, unfortunatley seems to be a slight price to pay for the fairly reliable accuracy.

When landing on the green, the way the ball reacts also depends quite heavily on how you catch the shot with the AP2s. Well struck approach shots will result in the golf ball responding very well, and even the longer irons should hold most greens, even firmer ones.

Mis-hits with the short irons still landed softly but poorer strikes with the longer irons didn't always land well, but this isn't something that isn't unexpected in irons aimed primarily at better players.

But overall we would say that the Titleist AP2 irons are probably more likely to benefit the mid handicapper looking to get good. Rather than the good player looking to go up another level and get very good.

If you're a mid handicapper with a decent golf swing, then these are irons that can definitely offer alot of potential improvement in play and in scoring.

It does have to be said that the price however is admittedly abit on the high side for most golfers budgets. As of 2011 the Titleist AP2 irons usually cost around £248.
